LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING!

Updated: Aug 3, 2024

On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed on July 30, we reaffirm our commitment to the theme “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.” As the President of Migrant Workers' Voice, I urge everyone to recognize the alarming reality that one in three trafficking victims is a child. We must accelerate our efforts to protect our most vulnerable, ensuring that no child suffers the horrors of exploitation. Together, we can create a safer environment for all children in Uganda and beyond, and work towards eradicating human trafficking in all its forms.

However, the fight against child trafficking in Uganda faces significant challenges. High levels of poverty and unemployment compel families to send their children away for work, often leading to exploitation. Many communities remain unaware of the signs of trafficking, increasing vulnerability and perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Weak law enforcement, compounded by corruption, hampers the prosecution of traffickers, while traditional practices like child marriage further entrench the problem.

Limited resources for prevention programs and victim support services impede our efforts, and the lack of adequate support systems makes recovery for victims difficult. Economic migration pressures often result in children being trafficked across borders under false pretenses, while the demand for cheap labour in sectors like agriculture and domestic work fuels trafficking activities.

Moreover, Uganda's position as a source, transit, and destination country complicates our response to trafficking. The ongoing impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated socio-economic conditions, leading to a rise in child exploitation cases.

To combat these challenges, we must strengthen our legal frameworks and enhance community awareness. It is crucial to engage local leaders and stakeholders in addressing the root causes of trafficking, such as poverty and cultural practices that devalue children. By investing in education and social safety nets, we can empower communities to protect their children and break the cycle of trafficking.

As we observe this important day, let us unite in our efforts to ensure that no child is left behind in the fight against human trafficking. Together, we can build a future where every child is safe, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive.
