Migrant Workers’ Voice Named “Humanitarian NGO of the Year” at 2026 Wezesha Awards
Nairobi, Kenya — August 28, 2026: Migrant Workers' Voice (MWV), a leading Ugandan civil society organization dedicated to protecting and empowering migrant workers, has been honored with the Humanitarian NGO of the Year 2026 award at the prestigious Wezesha Awards.
The award was presented during the official ceremony held on August 8, 2026, at the PrideInn Plaza Hotel in Nairobi. Organized by Kenya’s Wezesha Group, this year’s event focused on the theme: “Youth Power: Protecting Democratic Gains, Advancing Justice and Promoting Open Governance.”
MWV received the distinction for its sustained humanitarian interventions supporting vulnerable migrant populations. Key initiatives cited by the jury include emergency repatriation assistance, pro bono legal representation for victims of trafficking and labor exploitation, and community-based development programs designed to support returning migrants and their families.
Kayonde Abdallah, Executive Director of MWV, accepted the award and dedicated it to the workers and families the organization serves.
“This award reflects the resilience and courage of migrant workers who face immense challenges in their pursuit of opportunity,” Mr. Kayonde stated. “It is also a call to action for governments, partners, and communities to do more to protect those who leave home to build a better future. We remain committed to standing with them at every step of the way.”
The 2026 Wezesha Awards gathered leaders from government, the private sector, development agencies, civil society, and youth networks to celebrate excellence in civic participation, accountability, innovation, peacebuilding, and community service. Organizers emphasized that young people are central to advancing democracy, justice, and open governance across Africa.
This recognition underscores the critical role of migrant-focused organizations in shaping regional migration policy, safeguarding human rights, and delivering crisis support. MWV has pledged to leverage this achievement to strengthen its programs, expand its geographic reach, and deepen collaborations with regional and international partners committed to safe, orderly, and dignified migration.
