Uganda’s education and labor market realities paint a vivid picture of both promise and pressure. Each year, about 700,000 young Ugandans reach working age, but the economy struggles to create enough quality jobs, especially for the nearly 500,000 annual graduates from both academic and vocational tracks. High secondary school dropout rates estimated at around 25% mean many youths lack the skills needed for formal or industrial employment, and even those who graduate often face a mismatch between their training and the demands of the job market. As a result, most young people end up in low-paid, informal, or subsistence agriculture, with only about 20% of workers in waged employment and the rest self-employed or unpaid family workers. - Call for Applications: Join the MWV Advisory Board 2025

In Saudi Arabia, labour disputes between migrant workers and their employers are frequently treated not as civil contractual issues but as migration violations, leading to arbitrary detention and deportation. This harsh reality disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including African women and boys working as domestic workers, who often find themselves trapped in prolonged detention centers under the pretext of awaiting government-issued "exit permits." These workers experience conditions akin to imprisonment, stripped of the freedom to leave at will. - Exploitation of Ugandan Migrant Workers in Saudi Arabia: A Legal, Ethical, and Human Rights Dilemma
Mr. Kayonde Abdallah's talk sheds light on the plight of Ugandan migrant workers legally employed in Saudi Arabia through bilateral arrangements. Despite adhering to regulations, these workers often face exploitation and abuse, including arbitrary deportation upon encountering contractual disputes or mistreatment by their sponsors (kafala system). The talk questions the effectiveness of Saudi laws and bilateral agreements between Uganda and Saudi Arabia in protecting migrant workers' rights. It calls for accountability from both governments to address this issue, including investigating recruitment processes, ensuring proper training, medical check-ups, and addressing the lack of support or compensation for victims facing civil contract disputes that escalate into criminal punishments without due process. - Urgent: Addressing Ethical Concerns in Organ Donation Practices - Prevent Exploitation and Protect Vulnerable Populations, Illustrated by Patricia Nabukenya's Case

There are reports suggesting that certain Middle Eastern nations exploit this practice by bringing indigent, typically black females to hospitals under false pretenses, subsequently declaring them critically ill and seeking their consent for organ donation due to presumed inability to recover!
